Your Nursery is based in the ground floor of an old school building in East Manchester, and I designed the original alterations. In 2014 I was asked to return to design the conversion of the old school canteen as a separate unit for toddlers and babies.
This building was, before conversion profoundly shabby and run down; bare brick walls and exposed concrete frame; and was used as a depository for broken play equipment.
The aim of the work - funded by a grant from Manchester City Council - was to create a pleasant and comfortable setting in which babies and toddlers could play (and, sometimes, sleep).
Achieving this involved :
- removing the security grilles (redolent of a small gaol) and replace them with secure windows
- insulate the entire building
- upgrade the heating
- repair the concrete frame
- new sanitary and kitchen/utility fittings and finishes
All the work had to be carried out to the highest safety standards, as immediately outside the site was the children's play area of the main Nursery building.
The composite photographs show the 'before' and 'after' state of the building.
The work was completed in early 2015, within the very tight budget set by the Local Authority grant.
